Film Size: 18.3 GB
Film Rating: G
Region: A

The Video

Hachi: A Dog’s Tale comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 video presentation. The movie is intentionally soft, although features a nice level of detail whenever the scene allows. The Blu-ray looks very accurate to what I noted when seeing the film last year.

The colors are very good and look great particularly during any outdoor scene. Black levels remain nice and inky from beginning to end. The film has a nice healthy layer of grain throughout, although thanks to an anonymous reader, it must be stylized grain as the film was shot digitally . There are certain moments whichwere definitely on the softer side, but there is a nice level of clarity that you cannot confuse with a standard DVD.

I wish I could say the film looks among the best films on the format, but it simply doesn’t. The film looks the way it is intended to and will satisfy most viewers, but I can definitely see why some would not like the look of the film even in high-definition.

The video presentation is free of any technical glitches, so whether you like the look or not, this is what the film was meant to look like. I can’t say I was always impressed by the high-def picture, but it still has very good qualities than any viewer will appreciate. 8/10.

The Audio

A 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track is included and sounds good. The film’s dialogue is presented front and center, always easy to understand and crisp like any new release. The movie isn’t one that necessarily calls for much surround use to be honest.

The majority of the film features few necessary effects aside from sounds of the train station and the people walking by. Those moments do make light use of the surround speakers and give life to this surround sound track.

Everything presented was always easy to understand and the music used in the film came through beautifully. I think almost any viewer will be more than satisfied by quality of this mix as it never feels lifeless or weak. 7.5/10.

The Extras

This is a very informative feature which covers all levels of production. It features cast and crew interviews as well as a good amount of behind-the-scenes footage. Any fan of the film will love this feature; it’s very informative and entertaining.

There is only one real bonus feature included, although MovieIQ is a nice addition that some may enjoy. The featurette included is great though, I absolutely loved it and it’s presented in high-definition. I like to call this a case of ‘quality not quantity,’ although there should have been more extras included such as the theatrical trailer and deleted scenes. 4/10.

The Movie

Hachi: A Dog’s Tale is a film I had the opportunity to see at a film festival; unfortunately the film never received a theatrical release in the U.S. The film stars Richard Gere as Professor Parker Wilson, but the real stars of the film are the dogs that play Hachi.

Let me start off by saying the movie is great and certainly deserved a theatrical release and viewer response has been great. The movie could have been quite successful theatrically if marketed right and if actually given a chance.

The movie tells the story of the relationship between a man and dog. I think I speak for many when I say that I consider my dog my friend as well as part of my family. A dog can bring happiness and comfort when you feel down and a dog will love you no matter if you’re rich or poor.

Hachi: A Dog’s Tale is a beautiful story of loyalty and friendship. The movie always receives a very tearful response, even revisiting the film on Blu-ray brought on many tears which I tried desperately to hold back. The story is so simple yet so incredible and there is no way this film will not touch even the coldest of viewers.

The plot of the story is about Professor Parker Wilson who comes across a lost puppy at the train station as he departs the train. He takes the puppy home and while his wife initially is hesitant of keeping the dog, they eventually welcome the dog into their family.

Most of you who have heard of the film have probably already heard or read the story which the film is based on. Unlike Marley and Me, another dog-based film, this one is much more touching and certainly much better quality-wise.

The entire production grew did a great job at making such a believable situation and the dog trainers should be proud of their work on this film. We truly feel for the dog and the emotion and pain is clearly there. This is by far one of the best films involving an animal as a key character that I have ever seen.

The movie is beautiful in every aspect and the acting is top notch. This is a film that may upset younger viewers in particular, but it is a very clean and great family film that everyone will really enjoy. I love Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, it takes such a simple story that I think many can relate to in one way or another and is turned into such a quality film. This is a film that should be seen by every dog lover. 9/10.

The Blu-news Summary

Hachi is one of my favorite films this year; it’s touching and great for the entire family. The Blu-ray release is good, featuring a fitting video presentation and good audio track. The extras are quality over quantity. Hachi: A Dog’s Tale is ‘Highly Recommended’ to any dog lover.

The Video

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 video presentation. The movie looks quite good in high-definition and is definitely a step up quality-wise from previous Screen Media Films Blu-ray releases.

The film is definitely lower budget, but the quality of the image is far from low. The movie looks very natural, featuring a thin layer of grain throughout. Colors are not always rich and vibrant, but are quite strong overall. Black levels stay solid throughout.

Detail can be very good, particularly wider shots which feature a strong amount of clarity and detail. Close-up shots can be a bit softer at times, but they do exhibit some fine detail. Certain scenes look quite beautiful and little details come to life on-screen.

This is not among the best video presentations I have come to experience, but for a lower budget film this is definitely looks quite good. If you set your expectations accordingly, there is no way you can be disappointed by this high-def release. 7.5/10.

The Audio

A 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track is included and is actually quite immersive from time to time. Dialogue is the focus and that is presented front and center at all times. The quality of the dialogue is up to par with any new release, featuring a nice level of clarity to it. There are a few moments which sounded a bit muddy, but few and far in between.

The film is fairly quiet, but there are certain scenes that do make use of the surround speakers quite nicely. They are used to create environment during certain scenes without sounding gimmicky. This is something many new release films can’t even seem to do sometimes.

I was definitely expecting less from this DTS-HD Master Audio track, but found myself pleasantly surprised. The film is very quiet as a whole, but the mix does what it can with the source material and provides a track that will certainly please viewers. 7.5/10.

The Extras

Audio Commentary
With Robin Wright and Rebecca Miller.

Interviews (5:36) (SD)
Robin Wright
Alan Irkin
Blake Lively

I watched the film a second time with an audio commentary which did feature constant discussion and you can learn about behind-the-scenes of production this way. The interviews are also quite informative and fun.

I do wish a behind-the-scenes featurette was included and maybe some deleted scenes, but the supplements included are quite informative as far as production of the film is concerned. 4/10.

The Movie

Rebecca Miller serves as director of the film, which she wrote the screen-play from a book of the same name which she also wrote. This movie is Rebecca Miller’s baby so to speak. I had never heard of this film before it was announced for Blu-ray release, but the cast looked fantastic so my interest was definitely sparked.

The movie features an impressive cast which includes Robin Wright Penn, Alan Arkin, Marie Bello, Monica Bellucci, Blake Lively, Julianne Moore, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. There are some very popular actresses in this film which makes me wonder why this film did not receive as much attention as it probably should have.

The movie’s main actress is Robin Wright Penn who plays the character of Pippa Lee. This is definitely a character piece which involves a wide-cast that are all connected to the main character throughout her life. The movie transitions back and forth between Pippe Lee as an older woman as well as a young woman (played by Blake Lively of Gossip Girl).

Pippa Lee is basically a hot mess, she has quite a few issues but somehow manages to help those around her in different ways. She is married to man (Alan Arkin) who is decades older than her and we see their relationship evolve during the young and old transitions in the film.

The movie has some very dark and depressing moments, including suicide as well as health scares and issues. At the end of the tunnel there is a happy ending, but there is quite an exhausting amount of pain on the way there.

The quality of the film is actually quite surprising as I had no idea what to expect from Rebecca Miller as director. She presents her story in a very interesting way, but it actually works quite well. The story of Pippa Lee is great and something I think many could appreciate and even enjoy if they only took the time. The film does have some flaws, but is definitely very solid as a whole. 7/10.

The Blu-news Summary

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee is a very solid character piece which fans of smaller films will definitely enjoy. The Blu-ray release is quite good, featuring solid and at times impressive video and audio presentations. There are not many extras, but I loved what is included. This release really doesn’t scream double-dip, making this one ‘Worth A Look.’

The Video

Up in the Air comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 video presentation. The quality of this release is great and while not among the best transfers on the format it still manages to impress. The film just looks very natural and warm.

The high-def presentation features a strong level of detail while keeping all natural grain intact. The movie’s color palette shines on Blu-ray; they are always rich and satisfying. Black levels are generally inky as can be.

The film really just pops off the screen and stays impressive in every way. The clarity and level of depth to be seen in the picture are magnificent. Up in the Air presents everything about as well as one could expect, its only downfall being the locations of the film itself. 8.5/10.

The Audio

A 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track is included and sounds quite good. The movie itself is extremely dialogue driven, featuring very few opportunities at all to include any surround use whatsoever. Dialogue is presented front and center while staying crisp and clear at all times.

The film’s effects are also quite front heavy but do expand from time to time. Despite some moments that could have added more light touches to create environment, I was more than pleased with the quality of the audio track.

Everything that needed to be presented is easy to understand and sounds far from lifeless. This is a very satisfying mix that I don’t think could have sounded much better. This is definitely a very good audio track. 8/10.

The Extras

Theatrical Trailer (2:32) (HD)

The extras on this release are actually quite bland to be honest, which makes me believe a double-dip may be planned for release within the next couple of years. The extras included are certainly satisfying, particularly the audio commentary and deleted scenes. Overall I’m pleased but I think they could have been better. 5/10.

The Movie

‘Up in the Air’ is directed by Jason Reitman and is based on the book of the same name from 2001. Alright so let’s talk about Jason Reitman, a young Director who clearly knows what he is doing. He has become quite known for directing films such as ‘Thank You For Smoking’ and ‘Juno.’

While I understand not everyone loves the movies that he has directed, I definitely have. Jason Reitman was really involved in the film ‘Up in the Air’, he even co-wrote the screenplay. Jason Reitman is also the son of Director Ivan Reitman, who is mainly known for directing the Ghostbusters franchise which many have come to love.

The film stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham. His co-stars are the ones getting all the recognition though, with Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick both receiving Best Supporting Actress nominations at almost every film awards show. Unfortunately for both of the actresses, this was definitely Mo’nique’s year for her powerful performance in ‘Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire.’

Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) is a man who spends his life up in the air, literally. He travels almost every day out of the year to companies which need to fire people and he’s the man to do it. His life is basically all about work and he loves it.

During one of his trips he meets Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga), a married woman who he likes and quickly develops a sexual affair with. Soon another woman comes in his life, Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick), although this time it’s not to his benefit. Natalie is employed by a company which Ryan is used to fire people; they send her with him to learn his techniques when it comes to firing individuals. They plan to use their techniques so they can begin to fire people via webcam, eventually no longer needing Ryan’s services.

Ryan has family who he does keep in contact with, although far from as much as he should. Very soon he realizes that the job which made him was no longer going to be there, really making him realize what is actually important in life.

There are many jobs like the one which Ryan has, constantly traveling with very little time to spend with family. Sometimes we get so caught up with things that we don’t realize what is most important. Of course the economy doesn’t help things, many have these jobs because it is their only option, but others do it simply because they believe it is what really makes them happy.

George Clooney as Ryan is perfectly cast; he manages to play a very believable character with qualities that are likeable and dislikable. The truly powerful performances in the movie have already been recognized, with both Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick playing powerful roles not like any of their previous work.

The film is not among my favorite of the nominated titles of the year, but it is a very good film. Replay value will depend on the viewer, but I would say the film has some decent replay value compared to most films. There is a nice touch of humor added to this drama, which will certainly keep viewers of all kinds entertained. 8/10.

The Blu-news Summary

Up in the Air is a very entertaining film that many will enjoy. The Blu-ray release is great, featuring an impressive video presentation and good audio track. The extras are bland, but at least they are included in high-definition. Overall Up in the Air on Blu-ray is ‘Recommended’ to all. I would have said ‘highly’, but the lack of many extras screams double-dip.

The Video

Old Dogs debuts on Blu-ray with a very satisfying 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 video presentation. The film looks clear and vibrant like a typical new release. Colors are rich and look great. I have noticed some reviewers mention skin tones look unnatural, but this is not a technical issue.

It is very clear that the very orange skin tones that you typically see on The Real Housewives of Orange County or an Oompa Loompa from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory are true to the source. While I’m not sure how intentional certain ‘tan’ moments were (aside from the obvious tanning accident scene), you can tell it is all natural particularly when compared to other actors during the same scene.

Black levels were generally very strong and were nice and inky. I did notice some very slight moments of crushing, but had I not been looking for it I don’t think I would have noticed it. Aside from a few scenes the film is very sharp and filled with strong detail throughout.

The overall clarity and upgrade from the included DVD is also very nice to see. The DVD can look quite good from time to time, but is really no competition for the high-def transfer. Fans of the film will be more than pleased by the high-def results as they are fantastic. 8/10.

The Audio

A 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track is included and packs quite the punch. The film presents everything clearly and crisply. Dialogue is presented front and center and is always easy to understand. The film’s surround use is also quite effective, featuring some very immersive moments throughout.

The mix is far from the best but to be honest I was expecting a very front heavy affair. The mix also can come alive in very strong ways during more aggressive moments, such as scenes in the zoo as well as the wilderness activity. Busy outdoor scenes also feature nice additional touches to make the audio feel far from flat.

The track is pretty great and fans of the film will be very pleased by the results. There are moments where I was thoroughly impressed audio-wise by this family comedy, it definitely tried to be more immersive than I anticipated it to be. The track doesn’t rank among the best, but for this comedy it doesn’t get any better. 8/10.

The Gorilla scene would have been interesting to see how they did, although I’m sure it was talked about in the audio commentary (which I admittedly not listen to).

A DVD and Digital Copy being included are a nice addition and add great value for fans of the film. This is likely a title kids will want to take on the road or watch in their bedrooms, so it’s convenient and the pricing is right. 7/10.

The Movie

Ever since it’s theatrical debut, I have read nothing but negative after negative review of Old Dogs. Needless to say, I went into the film with extremely low expectations, I was expecting it to be as bad as critics said to be honest.

After completing the film, I found myself surprised. The movie had some just awful moments and was filled with recycled gags from most live action Disney comedies, yet I found the film far more entertaining than I expected.

John Travolta and Robin Williams are an interesting duo as the film’s two leads, but they work well together and their on-screen humor can be very good. I don’t think the film is anything special at all, but I’ll be honest and say I didn’t find it as bad as most critics said.

While I usually respect critic response to films, at times I do think many don’t consider the target audience and review purely from an adult perspective. Yes, if you are an adult without children, you will likely want to skip this unless you are a fan of the two lead actors (both which have had their share of bad films).

Old Dogs features some dreadfully stupid moments, but aside from the stupid gags the movie can be quite touching. The movie theme is slightly similar to The Hangover in which the man named Dan (Robin Williams) makes a stupid decision while intoxicated on vacation and ends up getting married.

Many years pass since his wedding mistake and quick annulment, but he just now is told that he is the father to fraternal twins. The mother of his children has to do two weeks jail-time and very soon him and his business partner Charlie (John Travolta) find themselves the caretakers of both children.

For films like this it is important to mix both adult and children humor, but overall film quality does have to be sacrificed a bit. The gags can be funny but most of it has been seen before, but your kids will likely be laughing their heads off.

The movie is not great, but I do think it is better than most give it credit. Most people that knock the film have not even seen it, which while not necessarily a loss; it is unfortunate that people knock films before actually seeing them.

Overall I thought the movie had some very funny and touching moments but still has many negative aspects. The film will not be anyone’s favorite, but I think some may find themselves surprised that it really is not terrible. This is a decent family comedy that I’m sure many families will at least somewhat enjoy. 6/10.

Blu-news Summary

The Blu-ray release is good, featuring strong video and audio presentations. Extras are decent and fans of the film should enjoy them. Overall the Blu-ray Combo Pack release is ‘Highly Recommended’ to fans of the film, but newcomers should ‘Give It A Rent First.’

The Video

Funny Farm and Spies Like Us debut on Blu-ray with 1080p VC-1 video presentations on one BD-50 Blu-ray disc. The results are certainly a mixed bag, but I would not blame the transfers themselves. Believe it or not, both high-def transfers blow away their previous DVD releases. You may not believe it at first as the prints are quite unspectacular at times, but a quick comparison and you may think differently.

Both films are quite grainy and quite soft. Detail is never particular impressive, but there are some good moments of detail to be had. There is a very good improvement in overall clarity from DVD, everything is much sharper and easier to appreciate.

Grain haters may find themselves hating these transfers, but it is part of both films and luckily Warner Bros. reframed from scrubbing all the grain away as we could have definitely been in for a much worse experience had they chosen to do so.

To be honest, I think many viewers will likely find themselves a bit disappointed upfront, I’ve noticed a couple of people saying this is one of the weaker high-def releases they have seen. Those with DVD versions of this film should quickly appreciate the upgrade though as this is the first time these movies have been released in their original widescreen aspect ratio.

Colors are a bit stronger on Spies Like Us, they just have more life and add a lot to the high-def transfer. Funny Farm is certainly the softer of the two films and colors at times can be quite unspectacular, but even they are improved from DVD. Black levels were fine on both transfers, but I wish they were a bit inkier particularly on Spies Like Us.

Despite Funny Farm being the softer of the films, Funny Farm features the biggest upgrade of both titles. The DVD is a terrible mess and the Blu-ray while far from perfect improves everything greatly. Neither transfer will blow away any viewer, but there are plenty of reasons to upgrade to this affordable high-def double feature of films.

Both high-def encodes are quite healthy and are free of any serious issues. Let’s be honest, neither film will ever get a cleanup which they could use at times, but this is easily the best either film has looked and I think many will enjoy for that reason alone. 6.5/10.

The Audio

A 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio track is included for both films and both are as expected, unspectacular. These are comedies, which are typically known to be less impressive audio-wise on Blu-ray (although we have some nice surprises from time to time). Add the fact that both films were released in the 80’s and you can certainly get a solid idea of what to expect.

Both mixes of course are extremely front heavy and everything is presented front and center. Dialogue is generally easy to understand despite some hiss present at times. The film’s sound effects also come through the front and are also easy to understand and get the job done.

I do have to commend Warner Bros. for finally stepping up their game on Blu-ray, two years ago and even last year, the chances of a mono track receiving the lossless treatment would at times be too much to expect from the studio. There are some unforgivable lossy releases, but at least the trend is not continuing, and I am hoping this is the case for all future releases.

The tracks are definitely as good as I think they will ever be. Neither was ever impressive and neither will ever be impressive. The films could get a 5.1 mix in the future, but who is to say either film will ever get a rerelease on Blu-ray.

Overall I think both audio experiences are fine and present everything about as clear as one could expect. Neither audio track is very impressive to be honest and there are certainly better tracks from the 80’s on Blu-ray, but I am quite pleased by the results and think most viewers will as well. 6/10.

The Extras

Like almost all of the Warner Bros. Double Features, extras are not included on this release. 0/10.

The Movies

Funny Farm and Spies Like Us are now available on Blu-ray from Warner Bros. in one of their new Double Feature Blu-ray releases. Both films are included on one BD-50 Blu-ray disc and I have to say I am definitely embracing these high-def releases.

I do think we will get a lot of titles this way that would likely otherwise not come to Blu-ray for years if at all due to the quality of certain films in high-definition. Let’s face it, as much as I would love everything to be crystal clear and looking like a new release, it’s just not going to happen and not every film could even come close with a proper cleanup.

I don’t think video or audio quality is sacrificed on these Blu-ray releases as Warner Bros. always tends to be smaller encodes regardless of disc size or film release. Had they been released separately, I do believe this is the same encodes we would see on individual discs, only BD25 Blu-ray discs instead.

Funny Farm stars the very funny and very talented Chevy Chase, a man who needs no introduction when it comes to some of the greatest comedies from the 80’s and 90’s in particular. In Funny Farm, Chevy Chase plays a Manhattan sports-writer who moves to a rural life with his wife, but little did they know what to expect.

The film is directed by George Roy Hill who is known for movies such as Slap Shot, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Period of Adjustment. Funny Farm was the last film he directed before he retired. He passed away on December 27th, 2002.

Dan Akroyd joins Chevy Chase in Spies Like Us, another man who also needs no introduction due to his extensive list of comedies. Spies Like Us is about two government desk jockeys who became U.S. spies but are used as decoys rather than the men getting the job done.

Spies Like Us was directed by John Landis, a man who has made some fantastic films but also faced some serious controversy with ‘Twilight Zone: The Movie’ and the deadly accident which killed actor Vic Morrow and child actors Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen in such tragic ways.

Regardless of the accident and what people may think of him, he has made some amazing films and music videos that will never be forgotten. The man did direct Michael Jackson’s infamous “Thriller” music video, something that will always be considered one of the best music videos ever created.

Both films are great classic comedies from the 80’s that I think many viewers will absolutely love to revisit. The films are still very funny and I really give a lot of credit to Chevy Chase and Dan Akroyd who were given funny material to work with, but ultimately made it theirs. Neither film is necessarily among the best comedies of the time, but they are both very funny and hold up surprisingly well. 7.5/10.

The Blu-news Summary

Funny Farm and Spies Like Us are currently available exclusively at Best Buy stores in the U.S. and are available throughout Canada as well. Both films on one BD-50 Blu-ray disc for a great price make this one release that will be hard for fans to resist.

The video presentations of both are accurate to the source as are the audio mixes. Extras are not to be found on this release, but hardly a loss in this situation. Overall this Double Feature is ‘Recommended‘ to fans and ‘Worth A Look‘ to all others.
